Place Type:  Lake

Llyn Cowlyd

At 70m deep, Llyn Cowlyd is the deepest lake in Snowdonia and North Wales and is around 3km long. However that is around 14m deeper than it would have been naturally, as the water’s surface has been artificially raised. Llyn Cowlyd nestles in the eastern Carneddau between Creigiau Gleision and Pen Llithrig y Wrach between the villages of Capel Curig and Trefriw. It is a beautiful location in fine weather but can feel desolate, with the waters almost black when the weather is not so good.
