Wansfell Pike and Baystones Walk from Troutbeck

Wansfell Pike may not be the loftiest peak in the Lake District, but it dominates Ambleside and Troutbeck. The highlights of this walk are both the unrivalled views towards Windermere and the surrounding fells, as well as being a cracking little walk in it’s own right, with a little variety thrown in for good measure. It’s no longer a Marilyn, but still retains a status as a listed Wainwright summit, and the popularity that invatiably brings.

Wansfell Pike and Baystones Walk from Troutbeck Route Description

1 – The route from Ambleside is extremely popular, so this provides a quieter alternative from Troutbeck. Parking in the village may not be possible, but there’s a car park near the church. This route starts off from the Mortal Man Hotel.

2 – From the Hotel, turn left along the narrow road until in 300m you leave the road for the Nanny Lane track. It’s hidden between a house and a barn, but is clearly signposted.

3 – Nanny Lane is a good, dry rocky path with walls on both sides which leads steadily enough up to the path junction at NY402 040 where, again, the path is clearly waymarked towards Wansfell Pike and Ambleside.

4 – Off the track, the path feels more hill-like, and after crossing the wall, climbs gently and with interest towards the Wansfell Pike Summit.

5 – Enjoy the view! The images say it all, so we’ll stop there!

6 – You can retrace your steps, or to finish off a thoroughly decent mini adventure you’ll be much better off following the wall along the pleasantly undulating ridge towards the true high point of Baystones.

7 – It does get rather boggy just before the final top, but we got as far as the southern top and decided to descend (for a pint!). Purists can cross the stile in the wall to get to the highest point of Baystones (if you can be bothered).

8 – Either follow this wall, if it’s misty, a bearing if you really want to try and be clever (when the wall will do well enough) – or the faint path towards the start of Nanny Lane about 400m to the SE.

9 – This brings you to the start of Nanny Lane, which is wetter on this higher section, but easy enough to follow back to the path junction at NY402 040 where the descent should now be obvious!
