Ruffwear Vert dog jacket Review

Ted and Awen (his human friend) have both been enjoying their winter walks of late, and bring us their Ruffwear Vert dog jacket Review.

The Vert is a waterproof and breathable jacket with a fleece lining and a nylon shell fabric designed to keep your furry friend warm and dry on walks. The Vert slides over your dogs head, has two buckles tucked away in the middle of the jacket to strap him in and two elasticated straps at the rear to go over the back legs.

What Ruffwear say:

Protection from the elements with a fleece lining for warmth during work and play.

The Ruffwear Vert dog jacket comes in two colours, red and a blue. Personally I was a bit disappointed with the limited colour choices, but I decided to go for the red and I’m very happy with my colour choice. It’s bright but not flashy and in your face and the orange and red strangely compliment each other well. When it arrived I expected better packaging and presentation. Ours arrived in a plastic bag, maybe a more eco-friendly approach could be taken.

The Vert prides itself on being a waterproof jacket with side release buckles for easy on/off. I found it a bit of a hassle to put on/off as the side buckles are tucked away in the lining. Although being tucked away does give the jacket a more streamlined look, it can be tricky to put on an energetic dog that’s excited for a walk. That being said once on it’s a perfect fit and after a while you get the hang of it. Ruffwear have sizing guides on their website and a video on how to measure your dog. I would highly recommend that you follow these guidelines as I found them to be spot on.

Previous cheaper jackets I’ve bought definitely haven’t been such a good fit. The Vert has excellent coverage over Ted’s back, bum and belly. Covering his belly is a huge plus point for me as this is always an area that gets really muddy on walks. So even on a dry day the Vert can be useful to protect against muddy puddles. The back loops ensure that the jacket doesn’t slide off, so you don’t need to worry about adjusting it during long walks.

Living in Snowdonia getting caught in the rain is rather inevitable, but the Ruffwear Vert dog jacket has been there to keep Ted dry! When his head and legs have been soaking wet his back has been completely dry, even with the fleece lining he doesn’t feel sweaty. This is definitely a breathable jacket that can withstand a lot of rain! The Vert does have a storm collar for extra weather protection but I don’t feel it added that much extra protection for Ted.

The Vert is light and compact. We always pack in our rucksack when going on a hike as it hardly takes any space. We use a harness and collar on walks with Ted and the Vert has been compatible with both with easy access to clip the lead through the jacket.

Verdict

At £94.95 it’s a bit pricey, but you do get what you pay for. This jacket has proven to be a life saver on several walks this winter and it still fits and looks like new. It’s a good quality, durable jacket that I’m sure will last for several Winters to come. Plus I think Ted looks great in it! I would definitely recommend the Ruffwear Vert dog jacket for dogs to wear on hikes and gentler walks.
